Diseases Brought by House Flies

House flies are carriers of easily communicable diseases. They collect pathogens on their legs when females lay eggs on decomposing organic matters such as feces, garbage and animal corpses. They carry diseases with their legs and the small hairs that cover their bodies. It only takes them one second to transfer these pathogens to food or touched surfaces. Mature house flies use saliva to liquefy solid food before feeding on it. In the course of this, the pathogens are collected and transferred.

Diseases carried by house flies include typhoid, cholera, and dysentery. Other diseases include salmonella, anthrax, and tuberculosis. They also transmit eggs of parasitic worms. Typhoid is an infectious bacterial fever with an eruption of red spots on the chest and abdomen accompanied by severe intestinal irritation. This has an insidious onset that has symptoms such as fever, headache, constipation, malaise, chills, and muscle pain. Cholera is also an infection and often fatal bacterial disease of the small intestine that typically is contracted from an infected water supply that causes severe vomiting and diarrhea. Dysentery is an infection of the intestines resulting in severe diarrhea with the presence of blood mucus in the feces. Salmonella is a bacterium that occurs mainly in the intestine especially a serotype causing food poisoning.

Anthrax is a notifiable bacterial disease of sheep and cattle, typically affecting the skin and lungs. It can be transmitted to humans, causing severe skin ulceration or a form of pneumonia. Tuberculosis is an infectious bacterial disease characterized by the growth of nodules (tubercles) in the tissues, especially the lungs. After hearing about these diseases, you could be worried to death that you might contract these if you let these little insects invade your home. But don’t worry; fly screens can be a deterrent against the entry of these dangerous insects from your home.
